On view in this section are two independent parts of the show-reel-style video work ‘A rose is not a rose’, produced on occasion of a solo presentation at Centrale for Contemporary Art in Brussels. The third video is the trailer of an art documentary which juxtaposes footage of the lives of two fashionable Youtube blogger girls from Beverly Hills with those of two struggling Ukrainian women. Besides the perverse dimension of these unmerited systemic imbalances, the film also sheds light on themes like friendship, authenticity and compassion, all of which are present among the marginalised Ukrainians yet entirely absent among the media-savvy Americans. Ultimately one is left wondering who is more at peace (and perhaps, absurdly, even ‘happier’) with themselves – those questioning and living on the outside of ‘the system’, or those wealthy and successful within it.
